Several years ago I visited a school in California with a visual presentation featuring my Alaskan-based adventure, "Frozen Stiff" (Random House/Yearling). It was the first time in scores of such visits that I had a 'parent helper' for the day. While setting up, her questions seemed odd. Personal and inappropriate. ("Why doesn't your husband go to school visits with you?") As the day continued, the dialogue became more strained. Oddly, lunch wasn't the usual wonderful 'teacher lounge' potluck fare. Instead she took me to a restaurant, just the two of us. In my experience, that's highly unusual. Only later did I discover that -- after reading "Frozen Stiff" -- this concerned mother had tried to keep me from visiting the school. Was the offense sex, drugs, profanity? No, my underage protagonist drove a pickup in rural Alaska without permission. That was it. Obviously her duties were more 'guard' than 'helper.' I so wish someone would have warned me beforehand.
