The Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship Committee is seeking applicants for the 2011Bechtel Fellowship. I would like to share comments from a former
recipient of the Bechtel Fellowship - Charmette Kendrick, a Children's Librarian at the South Columbus Branch Library, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries " I won the Fellowship in 2007 and it was the highlight of my career. The Fellowship provides a $4,000 grant to a qualified children?s librarian to spend a month or more reading and studying at the Baldwin Library of the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, Gainesville. The Baldwin Library contains a special collection of 85,000 volumes of children?s literature published mostly before 1950. The fellowship is endowed in memory of Louise Seaman Bechtel and Ruth M. Baldwin. I felt like I was in heaven the month I spent in Gainesville, reading and researching in the beautiful George A. Smathers Library. The Baldwin collection is housed in the basement and I received several thrilling tours through the stacks. Ruth Baldwin was an unusual collector. She wanted books that children had handled and loved. The collection is diverse?hundreds of editions of
Aesop's Fables; chap books; mystery series
from the 1950?s; and the largest collection of ?Little Golden Books? in the United States. My research focused on horror literature from the 19th
Century and I spent hours reading folktales, ghost stories and tales of wicked witches. As a result of my research I had an article published in the ALSC journal ?Children & Libraries.? I?ve also had several wonderful opportunities to serve on ALSC committees as a result of winning the Bechtel Fellowship. " If you are interested, the deadline to apply for this fellowship is December 1st. Application material / information is now available on the ALA site at: x.cfm
