LRB Recommends

The Forgotten Garden By Kate Morton $15.00 This book is a wonderful, charming old fashion saga that takes you on a journey from Australia to England through several generations. I have not read a book like this for a long time and I just loved the combination of winning characters, a bit of a mystery and great settings. The main character, Nell, is found abandoned as a young child on a dock in Australia. She has a tiny suitcase and nothing else to identify her. She is taken in by a worker on the dock and raised as one of his children. When Nell turns 21, her adopted father tells her the truth and she embarks on a journey to discover who she is and where she comes from. The secret is not revealed however for the many years, as it is taken up by Nell's grand-daughter when she learns she has inherited a small house outside of London. A great escape novel. Patti Little Bee By Chris Cleave $14.00 Chris Cleave is a master storyteller in this stunning novel about a young girl from Nigeria who lands in London two ye ars after a fateful encounter on the beaches of Nigeria. That moment required someone to make a decision that haunts all who were involved. The story is told in the first person by the girl and also by another woman living in London. Cleaves ability to inhabit the psyches of these two women is truly amazing. Little Beeis a deceiving title for the very intricate and heavy plot that enfolds slowly and mysteriously but also manages to hook you on the first page. This is one of the most powerful books I have read this year. A good choice for book club readers. Patti The Wives Of Henry Oades By Johanna Moran $15.00 Moran's debut novel is based on a real-life bigamy case in the late 1800s California. Henry, an English accountant, moves with his wife Margaret and children to New Zealand to accept a temporary assignment. Two years later, he signs on again, much to Margaret's dismay. During a Maori uprising, while Henry is at work, Margaret and the children are kidnapped. After years of searching, Henry is convinced that they are probably dead, and in his grief, he decides to move to California to start a new life. It is there that he meets and marries Nancy, a 20-year-old widow. Several years pass, during which time Margaret and three of her four surviving children have escaped, make their way to California and show up on Henry's doorstep! Honorable Henry takes them in, but this doesn't sit well with the rest of the community and charges of bigamy are filed. It is a story about marriage, familial bonds, and social upheaval at the end of the 19th century. This is an unforgettable page-turner! Kathy
