Hello, CCBC--

This has indeed been an interesting and worthwhile discussion. My comments on optimism vs. pessimism as the final note of a futuristic book are very simple. I feel that kids have so much to cope with in the world they'll have to deal with as adults (and right now seems a particularly stressful time), that they need to be *strong. *Whatever we can do for them, through literature, to help that strengthening is highly important; and hope is a far more effective ingredient in strength than despair is. (Someone else can say that more artfully, but I think my meaning is clear.) I remember my son and friends talking about Cormier's *I Am the Cheese, *as teens back in the '80s, and they found it really distressing..

Thanks for your many helpful comments. Elsa www.elsamarston.com
