SCBWI Expands Offerings to Fresno
Learn what it takes to get a children's book published. The Society of Chil dren’s Book Writers & Illustrators and the Arne Nixon Center at CSU Fresno will offer a one-day workshop for aspiring children’s autho rs and illustrators.

The Program
12:30-1:00 pm Social With Erin Dealey and Patricia Newman, co-RAs, SCBWI CA North/Central
As the new Co-Regional Advisors of SCBWI CA North/Central , Patricia Newman and Erin Dealey hope to expand workshop offerings in their vast (33 counti es) California North/Central area. This workshop is their way of mobilizing and meeting SCBWI members in the Fresno/Visalia area so that they can furt her address the needs of our children's writers and illustrators.
1:00-3:00 pm Workshop and Picture Book Analysis by Erin Dealey & Patricia N ewman
Dealey and Newman have taught this workshop several times before at venues such as CSU Sacramento and the SCBWI Spring Spirit conference. Together the y lead participants through the basics of publishing, the muddle of genres —from board books to YA--, work-for-hire, and magazines with humor and inspiration. Their presentation will be followed by a hands-on picture book analysis using participants' manuscripts and those of successfully pub lished picture books (to submit your manuscript for consideration, see the following instructions) .

To submit your manuscript for review during the Picture Book Analysis:
Submit the FIRST PAGE ONLY of your picture book manuscript to scbwicanorthc entral_at_gmail.com . (NOTE: Your first page will contain only 11-13 lines; SC BWI formatting rules apply; see http://www.scbwi.org/Resources/Documents/04 _FromKeyboardtoPrinted09.pdf ; those not in compliance will not be used in the session.)
Deadline to submit: July 25 , 2010
Due to time constraints, not all pages/samples will receive critiques.
Speaker Bios
Erin Dealey’s Goldie Locks Has Chicken Pox (Atheneum/ Simon & Schus ter), also available in Braille and as an Aladdin Paperback, is a slush-pil e success story. Recent titles include Little Bo Peep Can’t Get To Sleep (Atheneum), and Talk About a Great Invention (Pearson). She has two n ovelty books due out in the fall, and numerous manuscripts of various genre s on editors' desks. A credentialed English teacher and Writing Project pre senter, Dealey teaches writing to students of all ages and is a favorite at school visits. Patricia Newman’s newest picture book, Nugget on the Flight Deck , soars with real military jargon and life aboard an aircraft carrier (watch the trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S-TNw0cwp0 ). Other works include: Junior Library Guild selection Jingle the Brass , a hit with child ren and their train-loving adults; two nonfiction books from Pearson Learni ng Group, Seasons Around the World and The Science of Play ; three upcoming board books; and several articles for children's and adult magazines . She is a frequent speaker at schools and conferences, and her talks often incl ude anecdotes from the 100+ children's authors and illustrators she has int erviewed. Newman graduated from Cornell University.
