I wasn't a big fan of the graphic novel until I read David Small's Stiches -- Wow! It was a book I read cover to cover and couldn't go to bed until I finished it. (I had started about 10:00 one night -- just browsing throug h an ARC -- but had to read it all in that one sitting) I have since used it to show teachers the value and seriousness of literature in the GN forma t.
My K-5 students, of course, are gobbling up tons of graphic novels. The gi rls especially like Baby Mouse and Fashion Kitty. The boys are still enjoy ing Bone, Saradine, and the Captain Underpants series!!
