I would love to plug Julie Anne Peters and her novels, many of which have n ot received the recognition I think they deserve. She has introduced us to fully formed, interesting characters who have compelling stories. They al so happen to be gay, but that is not the sole focus, and is incidental in m any ways to the primary story. I particularly loved Far From Xanadu and am looking forward to her new book, By the Time You Read this, I'll Be Dead.
I've noticed an explosion over the last few years in the use of humor in GL BT books. Will Grayson, Will Grayson, a new book by the fabulous John Gree n and David Levithan provides laugh out loud moments in a wonderful story o f friendship and identity.
Transgendered teens are also becoming more common in YA lit. Brian Katcher 's Almost Perfect is a recent example of a straight teen attracted to a new girl, only to find out after they kiss that Sage is a biological boy.
I think there is a wealth of books exploring GLBT character and issues with out being preachy or didactic. They are character driven novels that are t elling very human and compelling stories.
