The problem with In Our Mother's House--and others--is that the audience seems from adults than young children. The Polacco book is lovely but not necessarily appealing to young readers. One that works better for this audience is Antonio's Card/La Tarjeta de Antonio (Author, Rigoberto Gonzalez; illustrator, Cecilia Concepcion Alvarez; publisher, Children's Book Press.)

Leslea Newman's new board books (Mommy, Mama, and Me and Daddy, Papa, and Me) are quite suitable for young children. Other books highly accessible for PreK are Heather Jopling's Monika's Papa Is Tall and Ryan's Mom Is Tall (Nickname Press). Another small press book that works for younger children is Emma and Meesha My Boy: A Two Mom Story, written by Kaitlyn Considine and illustrated by Binny Hobbs (Two Moms Books).

It seems that each year fewer picture books with overt lgbt characters are published while more and more gay and lesbian couples have young children. In the past small presses filled in the gap of lgbt characters whether parents or children, but financial restrictions may be preventing more books from them at this time.
