This is an interesting radio interview on the gap in reading proficiency (n ot just in the US, but world-wide) between girls and boys. I think it adds another dimension to our discussion.

Listen and Learn Why do boys lag girls in reading and what can we do about it? Listen as lit eracy expert William G. Brozo discusses the overwhelming evidence of a gend er gap between boys and girls in reading that is an accelerating internatio nal phenomenon. Brozo explores how current notions of masculinity may be co ntributing factors and shares field-tested strategies for closing the gap.
Brozo is Professor of Literacy in the Graduate School of Education at Georg e Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, and is author of To Be a Boy, To B e a Reader: Engaging Teen and Preteen Boys in Active Literacy (Internationa l Reading Association).
