Thank you, Beth, for several important insights.
Nonfiction is the more frequent book choice by boys, beginning in middle grade, and is a preference that continues into adulthood. Boys prefer in formation and action. Females usually prefer fiction. Who chooses poetry? Or what kind of poetry? I haven't seen any research about poetry preferen ces.
Literacy studies from child psychology show that boys prefer books with act ion and information (note that Beth's boy-book list included adventure fict ion, fantasy, and graphic novels). Girls prefer books that show the up s and downs of relationships. This information is a shift from looking at the gender of the protagonist or theme of the book to looking at what drive s the story - events or dialogue.
