Regarding the Toon Books that Robin mentioned, if you haven't seen the online resources that I think engage and connect kids to these comics, I really encourage you to do so.
They have all the books animated and online for you to freely use in your classroom -- even translated into numerous languages (Spanish, French, Russian, and others).
Kids can also build cartoons using the characters from the Benny and Penny books -- writing their own bubble text. (You get to that part after you click on a title from the link I provided above).
How this is boy-specific... you got me? I would have LOVED this, and I know my 7-year-old daughter loves these multimedia connections to some of her favorite books. I've never been comfortable with "boy books". I'm simply excited about finding the right reading connection for anyone -- newspapers, magazines, books, etc. Heck, if it wasn't for The Sporting News, I really don't know if I ever would have learned to read.
But the Toon comics I think are marvelous examples that offer a blend of visual and textual reading for any young reader. Great call, Robin.
