I have enjoyed reading the posts from all of you who work with young peopl e and have a chance to observe (and participate in) their book selections. Your views are much more nuanced then the general run of assertions about boys and books. In the case of the boys who are truly relectant readers, let me remind all of you about Deborah Hanson's experiment at Veterans Pa rk Academy in Florida. She asked teachers to select boys who were the wors t readers --- furthest behind grade level -- but also showed some leadersh

ip ability. Then she created a reading club entirely around sports (nonfic tion, not sports novels) -- often magazine articles related to upcoming Bi g Games. The club has been a huge success. Once the boys realized that rea ding could bring them information they wanted to have, they became eager, active readers. Just as so many of you have said -- creating trust create s readers.
