We have many boy readers in our school as well. It most likely has something to do with the fact that they have library class every week from the time they are 4 through 4th grade, our MS librarian is very much a part of the student's lives, and the library is the hub of the school. Our students know that we hit the previews and are always anxious to see what we bring back. They read our blogs (school and personal), and there is a heavy culture of peer recommendation as well. The middle schoolers do booktalks for each other in their core classes.
You never know what will happen either....last year we had a passel of 6th grade boys clamoring to read the Clique books. Took us by surprise, but we played it cool and said, "Sure...Bratfest at Tiffany's" is right over here...would you like to check it out?"
I think the key is in variety and availability of materials and how approachable your librarians are. -- Stacy Dillon Lower School Librarian LREI - Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School 272 Sixth Avenue NY, NY 10014
