I teach younger children, but I have never found boys to be particularly re luctant about reading, especially if I was willing to be a little flexible in what I call a book. Right now, a few boys in my room love reading some d ictionary of Pokemon characters. They read it aloud to me and are fluent an d can answer all my questions. I would hate for that to be a complete readi ng diet, but I have never found that to be true. They just like all sorts o f books and will move on to something else when they are ready.

When I read aloud chapter books, I find my class will listen to anything, f rom The Doll People to Trumpet of the Swan to DragonRider and will never me ntion that it is a "girl" book or a "boy" book. (Right now I am reading a b ook due out in July called Thomas and the Dragon Queen by Shutta Crum. This has been very well-received by all.)

My children are social readers and love to share their books with one anoth er. SO, when a child finishes a book, I usually ask them might like it next . That is the best way to spread reading with my second graders.
