I never had trouble getting boys to read. And, I found that they would read almost anything that I suggested. I had a Morning Reading program at the middle school where I worked. I picked a novel to read aloud. I had about 75 kids each morning. The majority were boys. And, they always wanted me to suggest other books similar to the one I was reading aloud. The books I chose to read aloud were ones that I thought were too good to miss, and ones that I didn't think the kids would find or pick up on their own. But, they gravitated toward the one I was reading and any other suggestion.
As librarians, we have to gain their trust. Then they will read what we lead them toward. I really hate to hear people label boys as reluctant readers. If they are reluctant, then we are at fault.
