Rafe Esquith writes about his use of Catcher as a powerful and effective shared read with his 5th grade class, much younger than I would have ever thought to share it. (He also shares such novels as Huckleberry Finn and To Kill A Mockingbird.) He's a radical and inspirational teacher. Reading his most recent book, Lighting Their Fires, has inspired me to want to go back and read Catcher (after 20 years) and the other American classics he shares with his students and see if they're still interesting and relevant to me.
