Folktales

I grew up in Japan being read to from books or simply orally told many Japanese folktales. When I was raising my two daughters in Wisconsin, my parents sent them many books of folktales. Now having two little granddaughters (3 and 4 year olds), they show a keen interest in not only the stories themselves, but the similar beginning of "Mukashi mukashi..." (Once upon a time...) and they repeat it with giggles. I believe that folktales are not only the backbone of our literacy culture but also the reflection of that country's own history. Folktales in general may not have strong popularity nowadays, but they have longevity to survive for many centuries to come.
