The Nargun and the Stars is one of those books I return to again and again. ..In addition to being a great fantasy, it is an amazing portrait of heal ing and family.
Patricia Wrightson was the first children's author I ever heard speak, when I was a wannabe writer in Honolulu. I'll never forget her saying that while she had just left her job, for years she worked as a hospital admin istrator while also writing and parenting two children (a single parent, I think, tho I'm not sure.)
She told us when her kids were little she wrote at night from 8pm until 2am. It made me feel it was possible to try...I mean, here was someone w ho had combined work, family, and writing. I still think of her words oft en when I get home from work and feel too tired to write.

The Nargun and the Stars is one of my favorite fantasy novels, haunting and eerie - but I wonder if it's still read much. It seems to be out of pri nt in the US . Thanks for letting us know, Judith.

I've just heard that Patricia Wrightson, the great children's author and re cipient of the Hans Christian Andersen award (1986) has died. She was 98 ye ars old. She was without doubt one of the greatest figures ever in Australi an children's literature and with her passing ends a remarkable era. For me personally, she was the editor at the helm of The School Magazine in the y ears I was reading it as a child, and I was conscious of the great legacy s he left when I came to work at the Magazine many years later.
The NSW Premier's Literary Awards gives a prize for children's literature i n her name every year. The shortlist for the 2010 award will be announced i n a week or two, and the award will be a bittersweet one this year.
