Where have all the folktales gone
I completely agree with Lynn, and have been seeing this trend too. I'm surprised at how many kids are not familiar with the basic folktales. It's hard to appreciate retellings like the True Story of the Three Little Pigs if you don't know the basic Three Little Pigs story. I keep finding myself recommending James Marshall and other authors who tell the original well, for kids and parents to hear the real thing first. The retellings seem to sell better and get checked out more, but that's often by the adult who knows the original and gets the jokes in the retelling. -Susan

The corollary to that tale however is the number of our students who didn't know the original tale! It is hard to appreciate a twist on a story if you don't know the story.
