Good morning Dean Schneiderd
I too was enthralled with Vaunda Nelson's book. The writing was deceptively simple and so powerful It was as large as the man himself. In my heart, E.B. Lewis' Negro Speaks of Rivers is the eternal favorite. I plan to read the text while turning the pages at a special program for Haitian relief at my church on Sunday. It is a powerful message of courage for ALL people who do not give up

I thought the CSK choices were excellent. Yeah for Charles Smith; what a gorgeous book he has made of the Langston Hughes poem! And E.B. Lewis has done the same for "The Negro Speaks of Rivers."
BAD NEWS FOR OUTLAWS was one of my favorite books all year, and Vaunda Nelson's writing is well deserving of the award. I only wish Gregory Christie's illustrations had been honored, too; certainly another honor book would not have been extravagant.
I've yet to read MARE'S WAR and THE ROCK AND THE RIVER, but I hope too soon.
Already a great choice out there for the next CSK Author Award: Rita Williams-Garcia's ONE CRAZY SUMMER--my early pick for CSK and Newbery!!
