(As I began this, I noticed for the first time that the cover of my book reads "My Abuelita." I thought of it as "Mi Abuelita," and I notice that's how KT listed it. Interesting.)
I adore this book--to me, its joyful exuberance encapsulates the essence of childhood experience. (I know, childhood isn't always like this, but it should be.) The glorious colors of the illustrations, inspired by Tony Johnston's evocative prose, are the colors children pick for their own drawings. The pages are crammed with fanciful figures that always hearken back to the text. I wish I could have come across this book as a child, so that I could have absorbed the illustrations and the words being read to me without the distraction of the written text to draw my eyes away.
