“The New Horizon – the Next 25 Years”
The 26th Annual Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature fo r Youth will be held on Thursday, April 8 & Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Ke nt State University Student Center. The conference provides a forum for di scussion of multicultural themes and issues in literature for children and young adults. “New Horizons – the Next 25 Years!” i s the theme of the conference, featuring the illuminating talents of two gr eat wordsmiths, Pam MuГ±oz Ryan and Laurie Halse Anderson and a brillia nt illustrator, R. Gregory Christie. Virginia Hamilton Conference is pleas ed to be a forum that showcases some of the country’s wonderful tal ents in multicultural literature for youth. The conference brings together renowned and local writers, illustrators, librarians, teachers, students, and scholars who share in the importance of multicultural literature. The conference, April 8th , Thursday evening program will feature a keynote add ress by the 12th Annual Virginia Hamilton Literary Awar d winner, Pam MuГ ±oz Ryan and a performance by The HeartBEAT Afrika. On April 9th, Frida y, a variety of local and national speakers will present workshop sessions on multicultural picture books, notable books for a global society, young a dult novels for girls, cultural graphic novels and puppet books. Friday's conference agenda will again include a “conversation" session with the three featured presenters.

CREATIVE OUTREACH GRANT
FOR TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS
The 6th Annual Virginia Hamilton and Arnold Adoff Creative Outreach Grants for Teachers and Librarians call for proposals is on its way. Two grants u p to $1,000 each will be given. One grant will be given to a teacher and an other to a librarian for proposals to develop new classroom or library prog rams that raise awareness of multicultural literature among young people, p articularly but not exclusively, through the works of Virginia Hamilton. Th e application deadline is February 28, 2010. For complete instructions and proposal guidelines see the attached application. The application is also available on the conference Web site: http://www.kent.edu/virginiahamilton conf.
Please complete and submit the application form along with your proposal. L ibrarians and teachers should send their application form and proposal to D r. Carolyn S.
