Just read Marcelo and loved it.  It seemed more profound to me than many books I've read recently.  I noticed that it was considered a "teen" book , but I think that many middle schoolers could handle it.  Do people thin k that the "bad" language makes it problematic for middle school?

Off topic, but I was very moved by The shepherd's grand-daughter as well. This book is perfect for middle school.  It presents the dilemmas inh erent in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict so well.  I don't see how anyon e could not understand the Palestinian viewpoint better after reading this book.  Highly recommend.

Jonathan Hunt just mentioned "Marcelo in the Real World " as a book he expe cted to see get more attention this year from award committees. There is on e award committee that didn't overlook it, since it won in the Teen Book ca tegory for the Schneider Family Book Awards from ALA. This is an an award t hat goes to books in three categories -- Teen, Middle School, and Young Chi ldren -- for "artistic expression of the disability experience for child an d adolescent audiences."   In 2010 the winners were:

Teen: "Marcelo in the Real World" by Francisco X. Stork (Arthur A. Levine Books/S cholastic)

Middle School "Anything but Typical" by Nora Raleigh Baskin  (Simon & Schuster)

Young Child: "Django" by Bonnie Christensen (Neal Porter/Roaring Brook)

We welcome your comments about any or all of this year's winners, as well a s any observations you'd like to make about the portrayal of disability in general in books for children and teens.
