THE RISE AND FALL OF SENATOR JOE McCARTHY by James Cross Giblin THE LOST CONSPIRACY by Frances Hardinge CHARLES AND EMMA by Deborah Heiligman MARCHING FOR FREEDOM by Elizabeth Partridge TALES FROM OUTER SUBURBIA by Shaun Tan

A couple of interesting points . . .

1. MARCELO IN THE REAL WORLD, which was absent from the National Book Award finalists and the Printz Award and Honor books, is once again missing. WINTERGIRLS and FIRE also received lots of critical attention, but got blanked by all three prizes.

2. CHARLES AND EMMA, on the other hand, has also been recognized by both the National Book Award judges and the Printz committee. Throw in its YALSA Nonfiction win and it probably becomes the most decorated book of the year.

3. It's also interesting that both the National Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize feature nonfiction as 60% of their shortlist, while the Newbery and Printz only 20%.

Thoughts?
