EIDI

I couldn't be more delighted to see that EIDI, by Bodil Bredsdorff and translated by Katherine Mahaffy, is a Batchelder Honor Book.

This gives a book that might otherwise be overlooked some richly deserved attention. ( It is the second book to be published in the "Children of Crow Cove" series.)

The prose is straightforward and simple to understand, but the story is substantive and compelling. The main character, Eidi, is a greatly talented weaver who is also a good but lonely person. When she feels compelled to leave Crow Cove because of the birth of a small boy, her journey, like all the best hero tales, brings her full circle when she struggles mightily to save another small boy.

As well as the human condition, the author seems to have a finely tuned understanding of loneliness. The setting is interesting and exotic to us, but there is a power in her stories that is hard to analyze. All I can tell you is that this is a book not to be missed.

I was enchanted by THE CROW GIRL, the first book in the series. I could hardly wait to get my hands on EIDI -- which did not disappoint. Those of you unfamiliar with these books are in for a treat.
