I'm eager to continue this discussion when we review the Siberts. In Charles and Emma, Heiligman managed to incorporate a Victorian flavor and her own personal reflections into the biography. It's closer to the feel of naturalist writing than what is usually offered as nonfiction for kids, and physically, it looks like an old-fashioned, cozy novel. Kids who are interested in Darwin and biology might enjoy C&E -- but I would also give it to anyone who loves Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, or similar works of that era.
Cheers, Maia

knowledge books
nonfiction books are books that share, and expand, knowledge; at the same time they train readers in how to gain, evaluate, and pass on knowledge; to me those roles are more central to the mission of nonfiction than any reference to "fact" or "factual" -- since a good deal of the best non-fiction puts "facts" under the microscope and exposes belief, bias, prejudice, misunderstanding, or assumption.
