I totally agree with Mr. Bennett! Jerry Pinkney was long overdue to win this important award. How wonderful that The Lion and The Mouse is so deserving of this recognition. I had just finished my 3rd grade unit on the Caldecott Award. Part of the unit is to read them the winner as soon as I can get it. We already had the book in the collection so all that was needed was to add the medal. The kids loved it! One of the things we discuss about book awards is that the medal on the front does not guaranty a great reading experience. Each person's opinion plays into a selection as well. We discuss the books that are still great decades after being published and some that are hardly read that might be more recent. They all felt that this selection would be one of those winners that would stand the test of time. I agree wholeheartedly with them.
