My friend Marian Creamer introduced me to this book and said how special it was. I read it through at one sitting, so engaged was I in the lives of all the characters and so moved was I at the end. I think f or some readers they will rethink their thoughts about that "nutcase" on th e street, maybe reflecting that at some time he was a young person with all his life before him. I think lots of readers will be touched by the portrayal of friendship, those that go awry and those that are unexpected a nd even surprising I think lots of readers will be touched by the rel ationship between the mother and daughter, not necessarily what the daughte r wants but rock solid in the most important ways, I think lots of readers will appreciate the honesty of those inner city survival tips----in other w

ords, I think there is much to appreciate in this complex book and the auth or handled even the smallest of details very well (the "imperfect" perfect boyfriend). The students I have given this to, both male and female, have loved it and many were rooting for it to win the medal.
