Hi All,
If you haven't made it to the ALA web site, attached is a Word document providing a summary of the ALA Youth Media Awards.
Thanks to Pam Gardow for sharing her excitement at experience the announcements live and in person--there IS a wonderful sense of excitment at each year's press conference and it's so much fun to hear the cheers as honor books and award winners are announced. I appreciate ALA's web streaming, too--listening alone at home or at work doesn't generate quite the same sense of community, but it's still wonderful to get the news as its announced.
Pam shared her thoughts on some of the winners and honor books. I echo her pleasure at seeing debut author Kekla Magoon recognized for "The Rock and the River" with the CSK John Steptoe New Talent Award. I'm also thrilled to see "Charles and Emma" win the YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction award (and be named a Printz honor book). Even though this was out early in the year, I didn't see it until just before the holidays and the experience of reading it was so pleasurable I immediately added it to my mental list of books I will reread every year. I was drawn into the "story" in this work of nonfiction, even as I appreciated how author Deborah Heiligman crafted and told it, integrating so much primary source material, including Charles and Emma Darwin's correspondence, into her narrative.
Just last week I took home "When You Reach Me" for our next family read-aloud. It looks like I should bring the CCBC's prepublication copy back to keep here for posterity!
