I can't tell you what a thrill it was to be up front in the cheering crowds when all the award announcements were made this morning. This is my first midwinter conference, and it has been such a rush!
I'm especially thrilled that Marcelo in the Real World won the teen Schneid er Family Award, and excited about Libba Bray's Printz Award for Going Bovi ne. So nice to see humor, combined with a winderfully fresh, imaginative p lot rewarded. (Very different from her other books, but fabulous!)
The other award I was really happy with was Flash Burnout (Morris Award for new authors.)
I haven't read When You Reach Me, the Newbery winner, but loved the honor b ooks Claudette Colvin and The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (which was my pe rsonal favorite for the award.)
Other winners that I loved were: The Rock and the River (can't say enough about this Coretta Scott Kin/John Steptoe New Talent Award winner) My People (CSK illustrator award) Almost Astronauts (Sibert Medal)
I was thrilled to see two different lifetime achievement awards go to: Walter Dean Myers (Coretta Scott King/Virginia Hamilton lifetime achievemen t --new award) Jim Murphy (Margaret A. Edwards Award)
Finally I have to admit to being totally out of the loop on the Alex Awards , except for Stitches. I know we have several of them, but I haven't read 9 out of the 10!
Now we just have to wait for the posting of Best Books and Quick Picks! I will be returning to Eau Claire TIRED, but very happy!!!! Pam
