I can't believe I left off two books I LOVED:

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld - rip roaring adventure in alternate history of World War I. Fire by Kristin Cashore is a prequel of sorts to Graceling, and is a wonder ful stand alone fantasy. It combines just the right amount of action/adven ture with a healthy dose of romance.
