I can't believe I left the following title off of my list posted earlier. That's the danger of trying to write from school, between classes....

Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marsh al by Vaunda Nelson and illustrated by R. Gregory Christie is a superb book , one I think should be on many of the lists: Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta S cott King, and Sibert. I like this book as much as any I have read this ye ar, and it's one of my favorites of recent years. It's a picture book biogr aphy of the deputy U.S. marshal in the old west. Vaunda Nelson's writing is vigorous, folksy at times, and giving a tall tale tinge to the true story. This is a book that could win awards for the writing as well as the art.

Christie's illustrations are remarkable and memorable. More realistic than much of his previous work, while still including impressionistic and abstra ct elements. He emphasizes earth tones, and features the landscape as much as the characters. What a cover! And an early illustration depicts a desper ado leaping out of a window, actually through a window, shards of glass sus pended mid-air, as if in a movie run in slow-motion. Turn the page and you' re looking down the barrel of Bass Reeves's gun. I never get tired of looki ng at this art: big blue skies, full-page spreads with guns trained on outl aws, and images of skunks, cook fires, and campfires.

I would love to see this considered for Newbery, Caldecott, CSK, and Sibert . A book rich in its prose and its art. A truly fine picture book biography .
