Well...I'm not sure if it's the time of year for reflection but there seem to be a number of titles on charity, spirituality, peace, etc. for young children...and just in time too. These are a few of my favorite picture books, because IMO, the entire package--text, artwork, message--is in complete harmony:

Bartleby Speaks by Robin Cruise (a story about a young boy of few words but when he talks, everyone listens) Billy Twitters and his Blue Whale Problem (an outrageous kid-friendly story sprinkled with lots of blue whale info) Count Down to Fall by Fran Hawk (good story time title with gorgeous artwork) Finding Lincoln by Ann Malaspina (based on a true story about segregated libraries in the 1950s) Fox Walked Alone by Barbara Reid (artwork is Plasticine, a form of modeling clay) Harris Finds His Feet by Catherine Raynor (sweet intergenerational story a jackrabbit and his grandfather) The Longest Night by Marion Dane Bauer (graceful narration framed by Ted Lewin's luscious renderings of the winter solstice evening) Otis by Loren Long (ya gotta love a little tractor that tries so hard) Stars Above Us by Geoffrey Norman (Lovely tale of a father in the military and his daughter who waits for him, illus. by E.B. Lewis of Coming on Home Soon fame) You and Me and Home Sweet Home by George Ella Lyon (Powerful story of
hope, sharing and community activism) Zero is the Leaves On the Tree by Betsy Franco (I really can't see a better way to explain this number to a young child)

And the nonfiction just keeps getting better and better every year:

Nasreen's Secret School: a true story from Afghanistan by Jeanette Winter (beautiful story of hope in the midst of terrible oppression) Saving the Ghost of the Mountain (the photos are by Nic Bishop and the text by Sy Montgomery, need I say more?) Years of Dust by Albert Marrin (well written and well-researched coverage of the Dust Bowl in a superbly designed book)

We're a little slow of the mark, but it's time to share your favorite children's and young adult books published in 2009. What did you like--and why?
