No doubt there were some good books this year. I would hate to be sitting o n committees this year.

Picture books: Otis- Loren Long. Hands-down the best of the year (and his best as well). Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep - Wright/Hillenbrand - Great read aloud. Fun and funny. Moonshot - Floca A Penguin Story - Portis

MG Novels When the Whistle Blows - Fran Cannon Slayton What a phenomenal piece of wor k. Absolutely stunning. A Season of Gifts - Richard Peck All the Broken Pieces - Ann Burg Crossing Stones- Helen Frost (the way she structures her poetry is mind-blo wing) The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate - J. Kelly

I did like When You Reach Me but had some problems with who its intended au dience might be (writing level vs. content level).

YA Wintergirls - Laurie Halse Anderson Just plain WOW! Marcelo in the Real World - Stork (well done, and his book for next year is good too). Shiver - Maggie Stiefvater (I know, werewolves, but this one has a main character who isn't so whiny) -- and it's a great read. Catching Fire- Collins (a middle book in a trilogy that can hold it's own , and what a twist in the middle). Demon King - Chima Great action/fantasy.

I'm not sure where this one belongs: STITCHES by David Small An adult graphic novel. The extraordinary autobiogr aphy of David Small's early years. Top 10 for PW this year.

Keep reading, Dave Richardson, who is currently reading the ARC of Linger by Maggie Sti efvater

We're a little slow of the mark, but it's time to share your favorite children's and young adult books published in 2009. What did you like--and why?
