  Effie Lee Morris Jones Passed away on November 10, 2009. She was born on April 20, 1921 in Richmond, Virginia to the union of Erma Lee Caskie Morris and William Hamilton Morris. She graduated with BS and MLS from Case Western University. Ms. Morris was a visionary, advocate, author, and San Francisco leader. During her distinguished career of over 40 years in urban libraries, Ms. Morris worked on behalf of children and youth at the local, state, and national levels and was nationally recognized. She was a ch ampion to make libraries accessible for all patrons regardless of age, disability, or language spoken. In 1963, Morris moved to San Francisco. Shewas the first Coordinator of Children's Services at the San Francisco Public Library that houses a Historical Research Collection of Children's Literature named for her and sponsors the Effie Lee Morris Memorial Lecture in her honor. This lecture is given each year since 1996. In 1968, she founded the San Francisco Chapter of the Women's National Book Association, and in 1971, Morris became the first African American president of thePublic Library Association and served twelve years on the California State Library Board, and was a lifetime member of the San Francisco AfricanAmerican Historical and Cultural Society. In 2008, the Western AdditionBranch of the San Francisco Public Library was named in her honor. Morris was nationally recognized in the U.S. House of Representatives, and honored at the California Legislature's Fourth Annual Black History Tribute to African Americans. The San Francisco Unified Schools and its Collaborative Partners opened the new Effie Lee Morris Library of Children's Literature on July 25, 2002. The Library holds the personal collection of Effie Lee Morris. Ms. Morris taught children's literature courses at Mills College, the University of San Francisco, Case Western Reserve, and Clark-Atlanta University. She has received numerous awards and honors, with the most recent being the American Library Association's Grolier Award for Lifetime Achievement, Trailblazer Award, and honorary membership, Case Western University Award, Women's National Book Association Award, Blue Shield of California Ageless Hero
- Joy of Learning Award, USF Reading the World Award, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority's Lola M. Parker Achievement Award, California Librarians Black Caucus Award, E.P. Dutton-John MacRae Award for the advancement of library services to children; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Golden Soror Award, SPUR (San Francisco Planning and Urban Research) Award, and commencement speaker at UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies. Since 2005, Morris has been featured in The HistoryMakers. A library is being built in the village of Nyeri, Africa near Kenya andwill be dedicated in honor of Effie Lee Morris Jones next year. Morriswas preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Jones and her sister, Mary Pettiford and nephew, Robert Pettiford. She was married to the late Leonard Jones who founded the UC Berkeley Black Alumni Club, was an executive in the financial services industry, and was a chapter officer of AlphaPhi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. She is survived by her cousin, The Honorable Teresa Duncan Cox, and her two children, David, and Jacqueline of Fremont-Silicon Valley, California; and cousins, Anita and Lottie Morris of Los Angeles, and niece, Antoinette Pettiford of Indianapolis; and nephew, Charles of Indianapolis. She also leaves a host of other loving relatives and many dear friends. A private family funeral service will be held in November 2009.
