On the other hand, some e-interaction may also either offend or intimidate kids. My daughter signed up for a series/online interaction through a community she trusts, and has not been happy by the amount of email from the online portion, trying to get her to do something to sell the books -- ultimately, they are trying to get kids to do the marketing for the series. Bluck. For something to "go viral" it needs to be at least somewhat organic in nature. :) Seems that some "content providers" (publishers, producers) are trying to create viruses, and then pass them off to kids to obediently infect their friends.

I see this as a web designer too -- that some people/companies feel that they need to put something online, but they seem to forget who they are once the internet becomes involved, and their integrity and authenticity are compromised. Reminds me a lot of kids trying to be cool without thinking it through! I think that all of us in the children's literature sphere need to look past the cool to the actual activities we are integrating.

I'm not in any way against using internet tools! I posted a link to childlit this week, of a new book-to-be that is currently in Flash format, by Peter Reynolds from Animationish and Fablevision. I think it is fantastic. http://www.rosekennedygreenway.org/programs/telefable/ Now, Reynolds is trying to get kids to do something, if they want to participate: create animated PSAs to make the world a better place. And have fun. I can "hang" with that goal, and the process, and the quality of his tech.

So a general question to the list, which literary tech tie-ins pass /your/ overall quality bars? What tech actually seems enriching, and which is just more stuff?
