At the end of last school year, when the fourth 39 Clues book was released, I arranged it with the local bookstore to surprise my class with individual copies for all of them on release day, two days before the last day of school. (Available on release day and thanks to an anonymous donor who bought the set.) I read some aloud, they read some independently and some in small groups, but the entire day was spent reading. Two days before the last day of school. They all analyzed the cards that came with it and compared the information to other cards in the collection, but not one computer was turned on all day.
My daughter, who was in that class, gets each new book and reads it cover to cover (she beat me with book six) before turning on the computer. And then it's a two-day flurry of entering her new cards, begging for new card packs, and click-click-clicking through the website. Finally, there's a two month and twenty-nine day wait for the next book. In my experience it's the books that create the excitement.
A boy in that class recently gave his how-to demonstration on how to use replicator cards on the 39 Clues website, so the online component has certainly worked for him. It's interesting, however, that despite their excitement for the 39 Clues series, nobody else in the class knew how to do what he demonstrated.
