I would venture to suggest that the Geisel Award and our own Zolotow Award have brought attention to the young reader sections of publishing, etc. No Child Left Behind also pushed this with the reading teachers all looking for authentic literature for children to practice, practice, practice. It is great that authors and publishers were able to rise to the challenge an d provide good literature at the level besides some of the mundane readers that were inevitably pumped out right away! We all started buying when the y started publishing things we could use!! EBK

"I am definitely seeing a trend to phonics-based and very simple books for young readers. Ten years ago I had a hard time finding these early readers in bookstores, but I think BOB Books made a huge impact, and now more emergent readers are available for general purchase, both in small sets like BOB and as individual titles. I suspect Elephant and Piggie have also influenced this movement. I'm also finding it easier to find nonfiction for early readers, which is great."
