Alison Morris addressed a topic earlier this year in the Shelftalker Blog regarding one of the recent trends we've noticed at our bookstore... the publication of a number of picture books regarding butts and rear ends. I remember seeing an occasional title here and there over the years but just within the past year there's been quite a few including Always Lots of Heinies at the Zoo, Bug Butts, Chicken Butt, Chicken Cheeks and Tushy Book. And Butt Book is due in stores very soon. Although such books can be imaginative, clever and appealing to children, this trend is beginning to grate on our nerves. Whenever we see an upcoming title relating to this topic in catalogs during our meetings with sales reps, our common refrain has become, "Not another butt book!" and we tend to discount it immediately. We do have one or two favorite books but won't order any more than that. I'm afraid to speculate about what this trend may indicate about publishing today and will leave that line of thought for future posters on t his topic :-)
