Before we move on to our topic for the second half of November--Recent Trends in Books for Children and Teens--we want to thank everyone for the lively discussion about reviewers and reviewing. Technical issues aside, it was a rich and thought-provoking discussion that planted seeds for future ideas to explore.
For the second half of November, we invite your observations on recent trends you've noted in publishing for children and teenagers.
Here at the CCBC, our fiction shelves in general are bursting with new titles--they're fuller than they've ever been. The many titles we have include a (virtual) explosion in young adult fiction featuring gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning characters.
We've also seen more books across genres that address, or at least acknowledge, time current events such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and of course the election of Barack Obama.
What trends have you noticed in new books being published? And what, if anything, do you think the trends you are noting say about publishing today?
Megan
