I think who you are writing the review for is extremely important. I've reviewed mainly for librarians. We all have limited budgets and could not purchase 90% of what is published. So knowing that, I try and be critical of the book so that people are not disappointed when the book arrives. Or maybe I get disappointed easily, but when I receive a book in my library that got a glowing review and I read it and can think of several similar titles that are better I wish the reviewer had been more critical. Most books have some merit, but I only have the budget for a select few so critical reviews are important to me. I want to know what the book is about, but I also want to know how it compares to others.
