Inspired by the discussion here I've devoted my blog today over at Nonfict ion Matters (on the SLJ site) to some of the same points Jonathan raises -- but from the author's POV. My sense is that reviewers are intensely aw are of their advising and gate keeping role -- which easily turns into a checklist of Hot Button Concerns and Meets Needs approvals -- which leave s any real engagement with the many layers of a book for future readers.
