I have run a book club based on the WEMTA Archer Awards for many years. It is almost more a crafts and activity club though! It has been 3rd and 4th graders (some years 2nd graders too) during noon recess in the LMC once a week for six weeks in the dead of winter. They are to read all the nominee s for the Archer Award in the primary and/or intermediate levels -- student s' choice. I purchase paperback and additional copies so we have many copi es of each and they fly out of our library throughout the two months! Befor e and after too because we mark them with little color-coded dots and have a bulletin board display about them too.

Then I prepare materials for all kinds of activities based on the books or on reading. It was a real bonus when a Judy Moody book was in the mix beca use the author's website had some pretty cool projects -- note cards, puzz les, jokes, etc. related to the book. I download and run-off reproduceable s for the group or order supplies from Oriental Trading and they do fun cra fts and writing, decorating projects. We have made penants promoting readi ng and books, kept little reading journals that they have decorated, produc ed string puppets, make note cards as gifts for parents or friends, made ou r own jigsaw puzzles with book characters on them, produced reader's theate r plays, decorated bookmarks, and made book covers. I have them record the ir reactions to the books they read with a simple code of stickers (smiley faces and other really small stickers from the teacher store places) on big charts! We also go onto book and author websites and play games, read abo ut the authors, look at other books by the s ame authors, and investigate to pics that are related to the titles each year. Last year I gave them disca rded picture books and let them use red markers to create their own book si milar to Chester's book!! They loved that!

Then we vote (I make up a ballot using the book covers from Amazon) and we send our votes into WEMTA. We hardly ever agree with the state but "my" re aders usually pick high level choices and argue famously for their picks. It is a big hit! Two years ago I had 70 kids in for recess -- we had to di vide them between the LMC and the computer lab and alternate activities! I t was wild. Last year there were about 40, which is the usual amount. It costs me about $100 for supplies and another $200 for books and it is wort h every penny! Great p.r.! Kids choose to come -- no requirements and because we do the p icture books all reading levels can succeed!
