Kate McClelland began her legendary Young Critics Club more than 25 years ago at Perrot Library in Old Greenwich, CT. Members are in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. They meet throughout the year on Fridays at 4:00 to hear about three or four new books, and to swap and debate books which librarians booktalked at previous meetings. Over the course of a year, the Young Critics read about 50 new books, then vote for their top twenty of the year. They often read books in galley, in effect “field testing” some forthcoming books. Usually they have read all the award-winning books by the time ALA awards are announced, though we occasionally play catch-up. I joined Kate twenty-three years ago to co-lead this group of wonderful readers, and have continued the club without her since January. The club remains strong, with thirty-five members and a waiting list. Kathy Krasniewicz added the Young Young Critics Club (Y2C2) for 4th and 5th graders when Perrot opened a new children’s wing in 1998. That club operate s similarly, and also continues strong with full membership and a waiting list. These two clubs are now run by Kathy Jarombek, new Head of Youth Services at Perrot Memorial Library; I continue as a leader of the Young Critics Club; and we are assisted by colleagues Sarah Abercrombie and Jennifer Lau.
