There is also a newly emerged definition of queer. Someone who identifies as "gender queer" does not identify entirely with his or her biological gender. Some young people are even experimenting with gender-neutral pronouns. And they are quite clear that gender identity is an independent variable from sexual preference. A biological female who feels herself to be more masculine that the average woman may identify as gender queer but may be straight, lesbian, or bisexual, for example. These young people wear the queer badge proudly. I'm not sure they even know that it was once
an insult. It's incredible how fast the language (and the culture) changes.

QUEER KIDS
Many younger people these days identify as ?queer,? and while the term is repugnant to many older lesbian and gay people, we need to respect young people and the way they self-identify, if for no other reason than to show
them the respect they are due. Terminology for referring to people who are
LGBT has evolved over decades, as have the ways we refer to ourselves. Using language with the intent to respect rather than denigrate is what is
key. This requires knowing and engaging individually with LGBTQQ (the last
Q is for ?questioning?), folks, and asking how they prefer to be referred
to.
