Dear Nancy:
It's one thing to be labeled 'queer' in San Francisco, another in a place
like Cape Coral, Florida, where young gays are bashed on a daily basis. We had an
incident here in Florida this week where a bunch of boys doused gasoline on a boy and set him afire. Horrendous.
"Queer' here is equivalent to a death sentence in many high schools.
As the old song goes: "When will we ever learn?"

If children are out and find they wish to be labeled as 'queers' that is
their choice.
What bothers me is the child who isn't out who might be called 'queer' an d shudders at the lable.

Many younger people these days identify as “queer,” and while the term is repugnant to many older lesbian and gay people, we need to respect young
people and the way they self-identify, if for no other reason than to sho w them the respect they are due. Terminology for referring to people who ar e LGBT has evolved over decades, as have the ways we refer to ourselves. Us ing language with the intent to respect rather than denigrate is what is key.
This requires knowing and engaging individually with LGBTQQ (the last Q is for “questioning”), folks, and asking how they prefer to be referred to.
