Many younger people these days identify as "queer," and while the term is repugnant to many older lesbian and gay people, we need to respect young people and the way they self-identify, if for no other reason than to show them the respect they are due. Terminology for referring to people who are LGBT has evolved over decades, as have the ways we refer to ourselves. Using language with the intent to respect rather than denigrate is what is key. This requires knowing and engaging individually with LGBTQQ (the last Q is for "questioning"), folks, and asking how they prefer to be referred to.
