Crossover Books

For a number of years I taught a course called "Too Good for Just Children" at our local Institute for Learning in Retirement (now operating under a different name), which offered classes to retired individuals, ages 50 and higher. One of my motivations was to share some of my favorite books with older adults who weren't likely to encounter them on their own. Students read books ranging from TROY, by Adele Geras, to EVA, by Peter Dickinson, to MARIKA, by Andrea Cheng, to SHIZUKO'S DAUGHTER, by Kyoko Mori, to THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LARRY, by Janet Tashjian, to THE MOORCHILD, by Eloise McGraw -- and though some of the books were more popular than others, all generated intense and animated discussion. I think it's sad that books like these, in the normal course of things, don't often get into the hands of adults. I know some librarians make a point of talking up YA's (and even middle grades?) to adults, but I'd love to see more of these books sprinkled among "adult" books in libraries and bookstores where expa nded audiences could find them.
