Robin just touched on an important consideration we writers would like to ignore. While writing, we can't afford to concern ourselves overmuch with the possible ages of our prospective readers, because our main effort has to be directed toward writing the story as it needs to be written. Once the book is on its way to publication, though, our editors and publishers are going to care a lot about the placement of the book within bookstores. I believe the most descriptive term about the result of this is "pigeonholing." Having your book pigeonholed in the wrong part of the store can be death for sales,
