Organized by English department faculty member Dr. Molly Clark Hillard, thi s small conference will bring internationally renowned faculty to USM. Thi s conference is the fourth in a series of international colloquia focused o n fairy tale studies and hosted by various institutions in the US and Canad a.
This year’s theme encompasses subjects as wide-ranging as literature, pri nt culture and anthropology. Mindful of our own global economies, this col loquium addresses economies in fantastic literature and culture. We shall identify economy both as a theme within literatures and as a way of thinkin g about the value of the fairy tale itself.
We will feature presentations from fields in the Humanities, Social Science s, and Arts. Special interests for the conference include the cultural and material history of fairy tales, the adaptation of stories orally or for t he stage, and folklore across cultures. This year at the University of Sou thern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, the conference is part of a semester-long “World of Words” hosted by USM’s College of Arts and Letters.
Conference events are free and open to the public, and include a seminar on how to teach the fairy tale, a reception at Hattiesburg’s lovely Saenger Theater, a keynote address by Dr. Jennifer Schacker, award-winning author of National Dreams: The Remaking of Fairy Tales in Nineteenth-Century Engla nd, and presentations by fairy tale scholars from around the world.
